We saw giraffe on many occasions in Kruger. They are the gentle giants of the plains.

Building a Cob Oven

We added the finishing layer to a cob oven. Cob is an Olde English technique for building with mud and straw.

Kerrville Folk Festival 2005

We've been going to the Kerrville Folk Festival for about 14 years. It is a wonderful songwriter's festival, with campfires of music, and excellent mainstage acts. Arlo Guthrie headlined the weekend we went this year.

Planting a Tree

Permaculture greatly promotes planting trees, for food production, shade, evaporative cooling, oxygen production, water storage, and the many other benefits that trees provide. "Reforest the Earth" is the principle in a nutshell. Here we plant a pear tree.

In our second class, we made a compost pile from scratch, using items from groceries and neighbor's curbs.

Screech Owls 2004

We registered an owl box on our wedding list, and this spring a pair of Eastern Screech-Owls has moved in. The red female provides entertainment dawn and dusk as she peers out, and eventually flies off. We have a log of the activity.

Our first group project was a herb spiral, which has 20 feet of bed in a 6-foot circle. It provides various levels of shade, moisture levels, and other microclimates to support a variety of plants.

Brazos Bend State Park

We visited Brazos Bend State Park in September 04, and saw a large number of water birds. Brazos Bend is best inwinter, but fall was quite nice, if hot and humid.
