This plant was grafted onto a root stock, so next we trim off the shoots coming from the root stock. This helps the plant put all its energy into the fruit-bearing main stem.

We dig a hole. This hole should be as deep as the plant, and twice as wide. The width gives the plant easy loose soil into which to put roots. The edges of the hole are hacked rough, so that it is penetrable. A spade-smooth surface would cause the roots to grow in circles, just like a pot.

We hold the plant and remove the pot. The pot can also be cut away. You never want to tug on the plant.

And fill it up with the loose soil. We don't pack it down, but just tamp it very slightly to get rid of big air pockets. We then add about 5 gallons of water, and create a bowl to catch water and direct it to the roots.
